The Role

To assist in the development of sustainability and environmental compliance plans to ensure that all mine activities are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. Develop and manage strategies by providing direction and supervision to the environmental sustainability employees and ensuring that the compliance targets and schedules are met as forecast. To contribute to the development of environmental plans and reclamation strategies. Additionally, lead a well motivated team that works to reach departmental objectives and targets through innovation and teamwork.

Your Responsibilities:

To assist with the development of environmental compliance plans and reclamation strategies, and communicate and review working plans, policies, and schedules.
Work with the mine departments to develop a monthly and quarterly environmental compliance-monitoring plan.
Provide advice on necessary environmental approvals and requirements involved in land use and reclamation plans.
Guide the implementation of environmental systems, procedures and policies and ensure all regulatory / legal compliance requirements are captured in the operational plans.
Review environmental audits to ensure that the operational plans continue to meet the overall environmental strategy.
Provide environmental assistance to all projects underway for the site.
Ensure environmental compliance for the site.
Ensure all government reports are submitted in a timely manner.
Manage environment monitoring programs and the environmental component of the permitting process for new and existing properties.
Manage workplace monitoring programs.
Manage the Mine Closure Planning for the property.
Provide direction to the environmental sustainability team.
Set and communicate compliance goals, audit schedules and environmental priorities for the team.
Ensure that environmental audits are regularly carried out and that work practices comply with all legal/regulatory requirements.
Ensure all reporting and sampling requirements are met and submitted.
Coordinate environmental and sustainability research, strategies, reports and responses relating to issues associated with mine operations.
Detect and resolve environmental non-compliance issues.
Complete annual budget and strategic business plan for environmental department.
Represent department in meetings, work with other department heads on strategic development, and work with manager in meeting objectives of this group.
Build an appropriate team through recruitment and development.
Provide employees with clear work objectives and expectations of the performance levels required.
Ensure that training is provided in accordance with the future needs of direct reports.
Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to direct reports.
Rehabilitation of mined out properties.
Work with government agencies to ensure compliance with all applicable closure and environmental guidelines.
Oversee consultants and contractors to ensure proper analysis, engineering design of closure options, completion of proper closure plans, and implementation of closure strategies to ensure environmental and mining compliance.
Establishing direction for sampling programs for closure requirements.


What we look for:
University degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
Minimum 5 years' experience in related field.
ISO Lead Auditors certificate.
Surinamese driver's license.
Highly developed interpersonal and coaching skills.
Fluency in English and Dutch (reading and writing). Speaking Sranang Tongo is an asset.
Excellent knowledge of local and international applicable regulations.
Knowledge of international and Surinamese regulatory requirements and governmental structure.
Good understanding of the environmental impact of mining and milling processes.
