Job Description

To lead, support and mentor Kinross’ site-based capital project teams.  Most projects involve modification, expansion or major repair of mineral processing plant and infrastructure with project values typically in the range of US$1M-30M.  Full engagement is required during all stages of capital project development from studies, budget formation, through engineering, execution, operations readiness, commissioning and handover. 

The purpose of the role is to ensure that Kinross’ capital is always deployed in the most effective way.  Adherence to safety standards and minimum project execution standards is mandatory

Job Responsibilities
  • Ensure that all projects pass through a controlled Stage-gate development process, typically comprising Scoping Study, Pre-Feasibility Study, Feasibility Study.  Ensuring that the project addresses a clear business objective in the most effective way.
  • Direct, hands-on assistance in developing appropriate designs (specifications, drawings, standards, etc.).  This may involve internal and/or external resources but the emphasis must be on practical solutions, considering purpose and constructability while ensuring conformance to Kinross minimum standards and all appropriate local codes.
  • Ensuring that end-users are recognized as key stakeholders, and encouraging their involvement and that of all other stakeholders in all stages of project development
  • Ensuring that all projects comply with Kinross policies with respect to HSE, Supply Chain and other areas
  • Direct leadership in establishing project execution plans, schedules, developing cost estimates and risk assessments
  • Assistance and mentoring in drafting project presentations and Application for Expenditure (AFE) documents to obtain funding approval.  
  • Actively leading the operations readiness stage of each project, and hands-on involvement in planning and carrying out commissioning
  • Acting as a conduit between all Kinross sites to encourage knowledge-sharing, and identifying and promoting Subject Matter Experts (SME’s)
  • Coaching the site project leaders and helping them fulfill the role of Owner Engineer when dealing with external contractors, and EPC/EPCM companies
  • Provide training to Site staff on project management tools
  • Problem resolution involves a high degree of independent judgement in situations where considerable variation in interpretation is possible.
  • Applies theoretical concepts or original approaches to complete projects or assignments.
  • Work is assessed based on attainment of objectives and effectiveness of results.
  • Ensures quality standards are upheld in their field of specialization. Identifies and resolves complex technical, operational and project management problems.  Directs the work of project teams and/or task forces. 
Education and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Formal professional designation in engineering or project management

Experience

  • Experience with mechanical engineering aspects of projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to commissioning stages.  Specific expertise with large mineral processing equipment, conveyors, slurry transport systems, high capacity water systems would be beneficial.
  • Experience with engineering and project management of small – mid size projects.   Working with operations teams, health and safety staff, engineering consultants, vendors, contractors and other stakeholders. 
  • Experience in the direct management of engineering and construction contracts to a value of at least US$5M
  • Breadth of experience with all engineering disciplines: process, civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and controls
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of large multi-disciplinary teams
  • Operations or maintenance experience , ideally in an international setting would be an asset, 
Skills
  • Strong communications and presentation skills, especially working with multi-disciplinary teams in operating mines  
  • Team player, pro-active, and ability to drive co-operative solutions in situations where do not have direct authority.
  • Works well in a structured, corporate environment
  • Able to frequently travel internationally, frequently
