The Role:
Responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the establishment, implementation and coordination of all activities in relation to workplace health, safety and security as well as activities related to the implementation of the Health, Safety and Security (HSS) management system (OHSAS 18001). This includes working directly with the selected EPCM Contractor in supporting their H&S management program as well as ensuring compliance to Owner requirements and transition from EPCM to Cote Golds Operating Team.

Your Responsibilities:

Key Area: Workplace Health & Safety – H&S Management


Plan, organize, lead, coordinate and control activities related to workplace health & safety and industrial hygiene
Promote workplace health & safety and ensure that the regulations are known and applied by employees.
Advise and support senior management, managers and employees regarding all aspects of workplace health & safety. Oversee and assist supervisors in carrying out their responsibilities for health and safety at work.
Develop performance measures and reporting systems in order to contribute to the continuous improvement of systems, programs and procedures for workplace health and safety. Check and analyze performance on an ongoing basis and prepare relevant reports.
Participate in the emergency plan and coordinate activities concerning the safety of the site.
Supervise and direct employees of the Health Safety department. Build the team through selection and recruitment and conduct performance evaluations.
Support the risk and hazard assessment and the IAMGOLD risk management program throughout the mine.
Manage all activities related to the system of quality management. Ensure implementation and compliance of quality management and continuous improvement systems. Support and advise management and managers in implementing and maintaining the H&S management system.
Key Area: Manage the delivery of effective safety training programs.


Manage safety programs
Ensure that programs are of high quality, that required employees attend the sessions and record keeping is compliant with company standards.
Ensure trainers receive “Train the Trainer” courses and are familiar with the Act, Regulations and materials relevant to the material in which they are instructing.
Ensure employees receive the training required for them to safely perform their duties and where appropriate, structure the training to provide them with specialty accreditation related to their role function.
Conduct supervisory training programs and ensure training provided by Trainers is compliant and meets quality standards.
Monitor attendance at induction training programs for all new employees, contractors and visitors.
Key Area: Lead and direct employees of the Health, Safety and Security department at the mine


Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to the direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers and minimize risk
Sets performance targets and measures, monitors and manages overall performance of the function and direct reports
Builds the capabilities of the team to enhance Health and Safety’s ability to achieve the financial and operating strategy; hires appropriately, leverages the talents of the function and takes corrective action where necessary
Ensures there is a comprehensive and effective succession management strategy in place for the function; identifies succession role requirements and high potential talent and actively develops key talent
Builds the team through selection and recruitment and conduct performance evaluations.


What we look for:

University degree or certificate is preferred, otherwise a college diploma in a related field.

Certified in the following areas; EMT, EMT instructor, MSHA (or equivalent) and HAZMAT operation level.

Formal professional designation in applicable area of expertise.

Experience in health and safety at work in the mining field.

A minimum 8 years of related work experience.

Management experience.

Additional qualifications – competency requirements Ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment.

Strong verbal, written, analytical, persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.

Good working knowledge of MS Office.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
