Operations Director - Tasiast

Location: Tasiast, Inchiri region, Mauritania

Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.

Job Description

Ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the Tasiast mine. Support the site’s growth and achievement of planned strategic objectives. Develop and lead the execution of short-term and medium-term operating plans using a multi-disciplinary approach that brings together the Mining Operations, Mobile Equipment Maintenance and Processing functions to deliver value. Formulate and execute on short, and medium-term business and mine plans, ensuring alignment with the organization’s overall strategy and objectives. Support technical assessment and implementation of significant changes in operating plans and/or operational practices. Engage and collaborate with other site departments, as well as Regional and Corporate resources, to deliver integrated value. Act as an integral member of the site’s senior leadership team.   

Job Responsibilities

Provides leadership and direction through managers of Mine Operations, Mobile Equipment Maintenance, and Processing departments;

Provides coaching and professional development to direct reports;

Contributes to the development of functional and long-term strategies;

Executes operational business plans to maximize value in a cost-effective manner;

Develops systems and measures that appropriately assess operations performance and reviews progress to ensure achievement of targets in their reporting areas, and is accountable for the results;

Safely and effectively leads and supports initiatives that maximize efficiencies throughout the operation;

Identifies problems and directs their resolution by applying advanced analytical thought and judgment;

Develops and implements business practices and policies within the operation that align with the organization’s overall business strategy;

 Job Responsibilities

Bears responsibility for the budget approval for its reporting areas;

Directs the allocation of resources across multiple areas to meet financial and operational performance requirements;

Makes decisions based on global standards, functional strategy and priorities;

Makes decisions in compliance with legislation and other industry trends impacting the company;

Seeks, identifies, evaluates and implements best operational and business practices from both inside and outside of the company;

Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone and prioritizes business goals;

Ensures health and safety aspects are taken into account during all operational activities; promotes and upholds the Kinross health, safety, environment and sustainability practices.


Education and Experience

More than 15 years of experience in several mining operations of significant size, with experience leading senior level teams;

General knowledge engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations;

Detailed knowledge of all aspects of Mining Operations, and the integration with the Technical Services, Mobile Equipment Maintenance and Processing departments;

Experience driving technical, operational and financial performance across multiple departments in the operation;

Experience in strategic change, implementation, and management;

Proven leadership and team-building skills;

Knowledge and experience in developing policies and procedures relating to safety, environment and individual and organizational development;

Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management;

Advanced English proficiency, with language skills in Arabic and/or French, is an asset

Appropriate accreditation or university degree in a related field;

Additional specialized education is an asset, but not required;

Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise is an asset, but not required.
