PanAust Limited is an Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer in Laos, with pre-development and exploration assets in Laos, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea PNG.

 

In Laos, PanAust hold a 90 per cent interest in the Lao-registered company Phu Bia Mining (PBM). The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. PBM has a Mineral Exploration and Production Agreement (MEPA) with the Government of Laos which regulates exploration, development and mining activities within the Contract Area. PanAust’s producing assets in Laos are the Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation and the Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation, both located in the Company’s 2,600 square-kilometre Contract Area.

 

This is a unique time to join Phu Bia Mining. The Company’s Phu Kham Copper-Gold and Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operations are world-class in terms of safety, production and performance. The Company is committed to continuing to deliver outstanding operational results while developing a mine closure plan that will provide sustainable outcomes for the Government and people of Laos.

 

This position is primarily based at our Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation, located approximately 120km north of the Lao capital Vientiane; however, as you will provide support to both Phu Kham and our Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation, you will be required to travel between the two sites which are located conveniently to each other.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Tailings and Geotechnical Manager, the key objective of the Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Superintendent is to manage short to long term geotechnical and hydrogeological works across PBM open pit mining operations and work sites in addition to providing the required support to external Project team if required. Key aspects of the role are focused on management and mitigation of geotechnical and hydrogeological risk through:

 

  • Technical lead for the site geotechnical and hydrogeological team;
  • Extensive geotechnical risk management experience;
  • Coordination and development of the site geotechnical team;   
  • Investigation programme planning and execution;
  • Develop and implement improvement plans for site geotechnical systems;
  • Operational design and monitoring support as required to ensure minimal disruption to mining activities;
  • Significant slope stability monitoring experience;
  • Well defined long term strategies; Budget development and cost control;
  • Engagement and management of consultants as necessary to support site activitie; 
  • Work closely with the Principal Geotechnical Engineer to develop action plans to address independent review panel recommendations. 

 

Additional functional responsibilities include:

 

  • Planning and managing all geotechnical and hydrological programs
  • Ensuring identified risks are communicated and appropriately managed
  • Continual improvement to Surface water and Ground water management strategies
  • Design optimal slopes for pit, dumps and infrastructure
  • Provide appropriate geotechnical and hydrological inputs into the short and long term mine plans and mining production 
  • Provide lead geotechnical support to other group projects
  • Training & Development in support of localisation and staff development
  • Implement improvements through support and delivery of projects

 

Skills and experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geology or Hydrogeology
  • Experience in a similar Geotechnical or Hydrogeological role within a mining operation will be essential for success
  • Experience working in an open pit environment specifically copper/gold/silver essential
  • Previous expatriate experience and working in a tropical environment will be an advantage
  • Recent experience in both technical and leadership roles will be highly regarded
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and contractor management skills
  • High levels of enthusiasm and energy combined with a proactive approach
  • Experience leading and coordinating a large geotechnical team
